AKRONAlbanese appointedAKRON: Former Akron Councilwoman Terry Albanese has been appointed to the Akron Planning Commission.Akron City Council approved Albanese’s appointment Monday, noting her experience on the council, including chairing the Economic Development Committee and serving on the Planning Committee.“She thinks through issues and has a ton of experience,” said Akron Councilman Jeff Fusco.Albanese, who will replace the late executive Tony Gorant, told the council she is “excited for the opportunity to be involved again.” She said she appreciates the issues the commission handles, some that matter to only one person and others that are important to the whole city.Albanese held the council’s Ward 6 seat until 2009, when she ran for an at-large post and tied Fusco. He won in an automatic recount by seven votes.NAACP conventionAKRON: The NAACP state convention will be held in Akron this week.The conference will be Thursday through Saturday at the Holiday Inn West, 4073 Medina Road, in Akron and is open to the public.Some of the issues on the agenda include voter empowerment and redistricting, health issues and self betterment.The state convention will kick off at noon Thursday with the minister/lawyer luncheon at the Holiday Inn West. Schloss will address area students about her experiences after the presentation.Schloss was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1929. She and her family moved to Belgium and then to Holland in 1938. After the Germans invaded Holland in 1942, Schloss and her family went into hiding. In May 1944, they were betrayed, captured and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Only Schloss and her mother survived.After the war, her mother married Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank. Anne Frank’s diary, her account of hiding from the Germans during the occupation of the Netherlands, was first published in 1950. Santa Maria, 53, of Cranbrook Drive in Northfield Center, pleaded guilty to the offenses Tuesday in Summit County Common Pleas Court.They will be sentenced Nov. 2 by Judge Thomas Teodosio.Prosecutors said the victim in the May 17 break-in called 911 when he noticed two masked men in his backyard.The police dispatcher advised the man to hide in a secure location while officers were sent to his home.As officers arrived, the victim left his hiding place and was attacked inside his home by Linde and Santa Maria, prosecutors said.The intruders were arrested at gunpoint by Summit County Sheriff’s Deputy Wes Dobbins before they could cause further harm to the victim. It also can be used in terrorism-related incidents or in response to natural disasters.In addition, the rescue vehicle will be used in training and education and be on display at community events and parades.The sheriff’s office received a $150,000 grant through the Community Oriented Police Services Technology Program to fund the purchase.Man sentencedAKRON: A Barberton man was sentenced to two years in prison for allowing his pit bull to charge another man and his puppy.James O. Henderson, 48, of West Hopocan Avenue, pleaded guilty late Monday to felonious assault, a second-degree felony.According to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, Henderson was walking his leashed pit bull in Barberton on June 17, when the dog attempted to attack another man’s puppy.The man was able to pick up his puppy before the pit bull could reach it. He told Henderson that he needed to control his dog, then walked away.According to prosecutors, Henderson followed the man and threatened to sic his dog on him and his puppy.The man identified himself as an off-duty State Highway Patrol officer and showed his badge.Henderson, however, continued to swear at the victim and threaten a dog attack. He then released his pit bull.The man drew his weapon and shot the charging pit bull in the head.
